PLAY

This week the Squirrels have been deeply involved in making treasure maps and then going on their adventures to find wonderful treasures. The children are making treasure maps on the computer using the program KidPix. The maps started off as being simple lines on a piece of parchment. As you can see above, the maps have evolved into complicated pieces that make sure to warn the adventures of all the dangers they might encounter on their search for riches.

The students have also been planning to put on a circus in the classroom. The students know that Coach Pekin has a lot of circus equipment so she was called in to help. It looks like we will have a cheetah tamer, hoop experts, tight rope walkers, clowns and jugglers. Next week we continue preparing for the event. We still need to practice and make signs & tickets.

MATHEMATICS

Over the last two weeks we have introduced beginning addition. The students are learning about the ‘+’ and ‘=” signs along with practicing solving these simple equations. The main skill we focused on this week was ‘adding on’.

Example: 7 + 3 =?

First we put the ‘7’ in our head, then we count on ‘8-9-10’. This is a new skill for some of the children so we will be practicing this quite often over the next few weeks.
