Mathematics
This week we have been exploring the concept of measuring. The students have been measuring each other and many of the toys and objects we have around the classroom. This week we are focusing on using strips of paper that the children cut to the same length as the object that they are measuring. Then we are comparing the lengths of objects using concepts such as ‘longer’, ’shorter’, etc. Next week we will start exploring measuring using non-standard units of measure.

Dramatic Play

This week the Squirrels have worked together to create a few different dramatic play experiences. One day we took a rocket ship and traveled the world. Another day we embarked on a cruise to the beaches of the Philippines. Today, as you can see in the above video, some of the children made a wonderful airplane out of chairs, role-played the different roles in airline travel and there was even a ticket making center with hand-written tickets along with hand-written money to pay for them. It was good to see the Squirrels working together to accomplish all these tasks.

Phonics

This week we began our introduction to the Letters and Sounds program. We started with the sounds ‘a’ (as in apple), ’s’ and ‘t’. Next week we will introduce the letter ‘n’ and ‘p’ . Then we will practice blending and segmenting words with ’s’, ‘a’, ‘t’, ‘p’ and ‘n’.

Wellness

On Thursday we met a few friends that will be visiting us during our weekly Wellness lessons. ‘Puppy’, ‘Bunny’ and ‘Snail’ will be helping us learn stategies and techniques to solve conflicts that we have with our friends at school and at home.

School Tour

td>

The Squirrels spent the week learning their new schedule, meeting all of their teachers and getting to know their friends better.

We made this  whiteboard story to help show our parents what happens during our school day. We all worked together to choose the areas for our tour. Most of the text was scribed from student comments. We hope it helps to give  parents a better understanding of who we see, what we do and where we go during the school week.

 Settling In
The Squirrels have spent the first week settling into their morning routines. We have been learning about classroom, playground, specialists and cafeteria routines and expectations. They have had a chance to meet all their classmates and are beginning to establish friendships. We spent a lot of time playing and getting to know each other. We are looking forward to rest of the school year.

Next Week

Next week we will have a chance to see our entire schedule and we will begin developing our classroom rules. We will have our first visit to the Children’s Media Center and much more.
